"Living an organic lifestyle means not only looking after our bodies by eating organic food but also taking care of the environment in which we live"
EVERY PERSON who takes on Organic living makes a difference, whether it be health, environment or education, those who take the steps are accepting they are part of a greater system and by taking responsibility for themselves and their generation, they are ultimately making a difference.
There are many ways you can support the organic movement; by purchasing organic food, educating children on organic living and reducing the use of chemicals and unnatural by products in your home. Organic foods are better for the environment, farmers and your health!
Farmers today are stepping up and joining the organic movement, but only through our support can they succeed in an industry that requires intense manual farming, high expenses, strict certifications and years of low yields whilst the farm is graded ‘organic in conversion‘. Until strict regulations and practices are met, the farmer, their crops and workers will struggle yielding low income and spending large amount of farming time regenerating the land and learning how to grow crops and produce without the use of chemicals and pesticides.
Today, nearly 4 million tones of chemicals are dumped on US crops alone, that does not even account for the rest of the world. The side effects include cancer, birth defects, hormonal changes, damage to the nervous and immune system and not to mention the serious impact on bio diversity of the environment killing beneficial insects that naturally protect and sustains the balance of the farms' ecosystem.
Wide range of food and fruits sold contain pesticide residues, some suspected carcinogens creating a cocktail of multiple chemicals that reside in your body. By choosing organic you get the benefits of avoiding added colourings, flavourings, preservatives, anti oxidants, emulsifiers, stabilizers and artificial sweeteners. Organic produce provides higher nutritional value as the food is grown naturally in rich natural fertilized soil. Meat and dairy unless certified organic and BSG free contain growth hormones, livestock are fed growth hormones to increase yield, antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections and traces of theses hormones and antibiotics have been found in dairy and meat products. The aims of organic farming are to raise animals that are healthy enough to avoid illness.
Eating organic meat and dairy is by far the healthier option. If this is not available then the next best option would be free range livestock. Beef contains less saturated fat than intensively reared stock and are allowed to roam freely and eat naturally. Only by eating meat and dairy produce from free range cattle and chicken are you certain of getting adequate amount of nutrients.
Organic farming involves having respect for the land and live stock, animals are treated with care and fed natural diets encouraging an harmonious ecosystem and bio diversity of plants and animals. On the organic farm animals are under stringent certifications, are given enough room to move around freely, adequate natural ventilation and lighting and proper bedding. Their food must be largely organic and when it comes to slaughter live animals are transported humanely and must not see the stunning and slaughter process while they wait.
The UK soil association defines organic farming as an agricultural system that encompasses:
